Minutes from April 2, 2008 Meeting

Meeting was called to order at 6:07 p.m.

ATTENDANCE: Melissa Bachetti, Leigh Ann Merrill, Rosemary Keilty, Nikki Blass, Viv LaBerge, Jessica McCarthy, Tammy MacDonald, Marilisa Camardi, Michelle Pilch

SECRETARY'S REPORT: Minutes were read and accepted.

CORRESPONDENCE:

  • Francine Lavoie presented a thank you note from the 6th grade for our monetary donation for their field trip to New York City.
  • A thank you note was received from Keila Zipkin for our donation towards her expenses for People to People.
  • A notice announcing defribulator training. A device will be installed near the gym.
  • A donation for $500 was received from Cornish F. Hitchcock in memory of his aunt Mary Hitchcock.

TREASURER'S REPORT: Report was read and accepted.

PRINCIPAL'S REPORT:

  • Senior Citizen Breakfast is tomorrow. K, 1, 2 will singing.
  • The spring concert is April 16th.
  • K/1 concert is May 1st.
  • Spring vacation is next week.
  • Miss Keilty shared the plans for the addition of the early learning center and 4 new classrooms and gym in the middle school wing. The early learning center can have a reimbursement rate of between 90%-95%. These are two separate projects. Ground breaking for the early learning center is projected for 2009 and ready in 2010. The existing gym will stay a gym and be used for younger children. At some point it could be modified into an auditorium.

OLD BUSINESS:

  • WRAPPING PAPER FUNDRAISER - It is all set for the fall.
  • TEACHER WISH LIST - No requests this month.
  • BINGO - Application and permits have arrived. Still in need of cash and prizes. Advertisements are in the paper and on Q103. Leigh Ann talked Karen Ricardelli so she could let the church know that we are having bingo. It was stated that the church may have bingo anyway and either provide us with their proceeds or make a donation. Leigh Ann will call Karen and ask them to cancel and make an announcement. Leigh Ann will ask Dena Solan to help us on the night of Bingo.
  • CLOTHING DRIVE - It is being advertised on Q103. We received a letter about donations from a consignment shop that was having a sale and might have left over items to donate. The clothing drive will be from 10 to 5 on Saturday. Another flyer will go home soon.
  • TRI-STATE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE BAKE SALE - There were 6 bakers and a profit of $157.15 was made.
  • NOTEBOOK COMMITTEE - Viv would like people to fill out forms for any committees or activities and give them to her at the next meeting.
  • BOXTOPS - The contest will run until May. A new flyer will go home. Approximately $500 was made in April. The classroom that has the most will earn an ice cream party.
  • KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION - Leigh Ann thanked the PTO for the muffins and balloons. Nikki had the idea of creating signs to place on the front lawn for the kindergarteners on the first day of school as a welcome. Leigh Ann reminded the PTO of orientation in August. Viv offered to bake muffins and Nikki will look into getting books from Hamilton Booksellers.
  • SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE - Tammy will call Debbie Carroll to seek her assistance. The committee will have a meeting in the near future.
  • KARAOKE FUNDRAISER - This event is on hold.
  • SENIOR CITIZEN BREAKFAST - Need helpers in the morning
  • SCHOOL SIGN - Nikki talked to Doug Humes and he said that it is not town property so they are not able to help but suggested talking to the board of education.

NEW BUSINESS:

  • SPELLING BEE - No information at this time.
  • MY TEACHER ROCKS - A committee needs to be set up. Tammy and Jessica will co-chair.
  • MOTHER'S DAY FLOWER SALE - Nikki spoke with Theresa Freund. The cost of the plants is 50 cents each. The sale will be Thursday, May 8th and Friday, May 9th. Nikki e-mailed the parents who volunteered to help out. Jessica will chair this committee and Marilisa will help.
  • PTO CONFERENCE - Nikki attended a PTO conference in Boston and passed out free goodies and shared ideas. She said it was very cool. She put together a binder. Some ideas include bus tags for backpacks for K,1,2. You can order 100 tags for $200. Schooltoolbox.com offers school supplies sent to school for the first day. Send home a flyer and parents can purchase the supplies the teacher suggests. Entertainment book - They will send copies and the PTO sends them home and then collect the money. Art Stamp - can be done at home. The Game Show - trivia gameshow, it is expensive and they will send a host. Game Night - The company will send you the games to play. You sell the games and earn 50% profit. Send any unsold games back. It was decided to set this up for May.
  • END OF THE YEAR DINNER - Discussed various locations.
  • TEACHER APPRECIATION - Nikki has some ideas and will share them after the teachers leaves. Teacher appreciation week is May 5th.
  • OPEN HOUSE - Nikki presented the idea of it outside on the second Saturday in September. She can have the Steven Dunn band play for 2 hours and it can be carnival like.
  • DRIVE FOR THE KIDS - PTO earns money for people test driving new cars. After discussion it could be a possibility for Railroad days. Nikki will look into.
  • NOMINATIONS - Nominations were verbally provided as following:
