North Canaan Elementary School
Arbor Day 2008

This year's Arbor Day trees are Green Hawthorne trees and have been planted at the entrance to the parking lot across from the school. NCES thanks the Canaan Foundation for the purchase of the trees, the North Canaan Beautification Committee for organizing the planting, Chris Toomey of Toomey Tree Care and Abrah Toomey for assistance in planting the trees, Tallon Lumber for the mulch and the North Canaan town crew for planting support.

Students in the fifth grade wrote poems for celebrating Arbor Day on May 16, 2008.

I Am a Weeping Willow

Weeping my heart and soul out
My leaves are like teardrops falling from my lonely eyes

I dance in the wind
My branches move like a dancer's arms
In an October storm

Tiny creatures nest in my textured hair
I welcome them with a promise to keep them safe

I yearn for someone to share my life with
Maybe an Oak or a Maple?

If only my friends hadn't abandoned me to become someone's floor
I wouldn't be called a Weeping Willow anymore
For I would have friends of my own.

Elm Tree

Free Elm tree,
Freedom for the leaves
When fall comes near,
Wish I could,
But can't
Relax or think
Under your branches
As leaves of different
Colors fall down upon me,
But along I go
To school for six hours,
Be back after

Tree

Tree
Enormous, beautiful
Smiles, sways, shades
A lingering shadow above
Deciduous

The World is So Cruel

The world is so cruel
So polluted
My clean air substituted

The world is so cruel
So inefficient with energy
We don't have any chemistry

The world is so cruel
So greedy
Very needy

The world is so cruel
So you chop me down
With my trunk so beautifully brown

The world is so cruel
So can't you see
Why do you have to be so carefree

Pride
by Liz

Swaying in the noons soft breeze,
Dropping leaves whenever I please,
Leaning, bending, side to side,
Making noise all through the night,
Animals rest upon my branches,
Of course they like to sleep here,
For I rock them to sleep with mother's pride,
For I am a tree until the day I die.

TREES!
By Sierra

Trees: tall and bold
Trees: bright as light

Trees: silent and motionless
Trees: wordless and selfless

Trees: hollow or thick
Trees: high as the sky

Trees: bright as night
Trees: bright as light

TREES!

Trees
By Tyler S.

Trees: motionless warriors of the forest,
Trees: always on guard,
Trees: always stand their ground,
Trees: numbers quickly depeting,
Trees: always being cut down,
Tree: this one shall never fall to the ground.
